How Do I Fit My Self-Care Into My Routine: Small Steps for Big Impact

By integrating self-care into your daily routine, you can experience significant improvements in your overall quality of life and making small, consistent efforts to nurture yourself every day. You deserve it. I used to be the person who put myself last (I’m sure many of you can relate…)

I was saying yes to everyone else

And no to myself

Well, things have changed for me and they can for you too!

Here are some simple yet impactful ways to incorporate self-care into your daily life:

Start Your Day Mindfully:

Instead of rushing through your morning routine in a frenzy, take a few moments to center yourself and set a positive tone or intention for the day ahead. If your children usually wake you up - you are starting your day frenzied, maybe set your alarm for 20 minutes earlier than usual, use those 20 minutes for yourself. Whether it’s planning out a successful and productive day, sitting in quiet with a coffee or tea, or just reading a book - be intentional about your time without feeling like you’re starting the day from a depleted state. Use this energy to take into your day and feel more calm and at peace at the start of your day.

Embrace Nature:

Take any opportunity you can to step outside or into nature - this can be so transformative to even the worst day. Whether it’s sitting outside with your morning coffee, reading a book on the back porch, or working from the fresh air - it can add an element to your day that you may not get by being indoors all day. The outdoors has a way of re-energizing you when you struggling or feeling overwhelmed or stressed - take a 5 minute break, walk to get the mail, take a stroll around the office building whatever this looks like for you - connecting with nature has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and enhance overall well-being. So, make it a priority to incorporate some outdoor time into your daily routine, even if it's just for a few minutes.

Unleash Your Creativity:

Engage in creative activities that spark joy and inspire self-expression. Whether it's painting, writing, cooking, or gardening, find outlets for your creativity that allow you to unwind and recharge. Creativity has the power to promote relaxation, stimulate the mind, and foster a sense of fulfillment. So, carve out time each day to indulge in activities that ignite your imagination and nourish your soul.

Take Breaks:

It's so easy to get caught up in the constant busyness of life - a good question to ask yourself during those times is, “I’m busy, but am I being productive?”. Taking regular breaks throughout the day is essential for recharging your batteries and preventing burnout. Set aside time for short breaks to rest and rejuvenate, even if it's just for a few minutes. Step away from your work, stretch your body, take a few deep breaths, or engage in a quick relaxation exercise. These breaks allow you to reset your mind and come back to your tasks with renewed focus and productivity.

Practice Random Acts of Kindness:

Spread positivity and goodwill by performing random acts of kindness throughout your day. Whether it's complimenting a stranger, holding the door open for someone, or sending a heartfelt message to a friend, small gestures of kindness can have a ripple effect, brightening both your day and the lives of others. Cultivating a spirit of generosity and compassion not only benefits those around you but also boosts your own sense of happiness and fulfillment.

Create a Sanctuary at Home:

Transform a space in your home into a sanctuary or safe, quiet space that nurtures your senses and promotes relaxation. Surround yourself with soothing colors, soft textures, and comforting scents. Create cozy nooks where you can curl up with a good book, listen to calming music, or simply unwind and recharge. Cultivate an environment that supports your well-being and provides a refuge from the stresses of the outside world. The biggest mistake many of my clients make is using their bedrooms for work, your bedroom should be a sanctuary - separate the work and home life in this easy change if it’s something you do!

Prioritize Rest and Relaxation:

It’s essential to prioritize rest and relaxation and carve out time for yourself, you are doing yourself a huge disservice if you are not doing this. Make time for activities that help you unwind and recharge, whether it's taking a bubble bath, practicing deep breathing exercises, or simply lounging in your pajamas with a cup of herbal tea. Give yourself permission to slow down and replenish your energy reserves, knowing that rest is a vital component of self-care and overall well-being.

Integrating self-care into your daily routine doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. By making small, consistent efforts to nurture yourself every day, you can experience significant improvements in your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Start by incorporating some of these simple self-care practices into your daily routine and notice the positive impact they have on your overall quality of life. Remember, self-care isn't selfish - I’m going to keep saying that this month!
